Alcohol could cause breast cancer
In Mexico, 46% of the population has consumed alcohol, and according to public perception the problem begins after the age of 14, as indicated by a study carried out by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, which also indicates that annual consumption of intoxicating drinks by women amounts to 1.4 liters, but what is the relationship between alcohol, first pregnancy and breast cancer ?
A study conducted in the United States suggests that the relationship between these three factors is very close. In the last six years, breast cancer has increased 28%, and Mexican women suffer from it more and more at a younger age, as suggested by Jaime de la Garza, a specialist at the Federal Health Secretariat (Ssa).
A glass to toast a new life?
Carried out by Ying Liu of the University of Washington School of Medicine and a group of experts from the United States, the research analyzed data from 116,671 nurses, between the ages of 25 and 44, about their medical and reproductive history, from the survey "Nurses Health Study (NHSII)".
As a result, it was found that if you drink before your first pregnancy , your chances of getting breast cancer increased by 34% compared to those women who opted for non-alcoholic beverages.
The study, which was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, not only establishes the link between alcohol intake and breast cancer, but also with the risk of having another problem, benign breast disease.
This is because during this period the breast tissue is particularly susceptible to carcinogens.
This research supports other theories suggesting that alcohol consumption not only increases the chance of breast cancer before the first pregnancy but also after the first menstruation.
Beyond the disease, fetal alcohol syndrome (produced by the consumption of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy) is the leading cause of delay in Mexico, according to Martha Romero Mendoza of the UNAM School of Medicine.
