Mental health: 7 tips to do something good for your soul

Our psyche also needs care. We forget that in everyday stress. Take care of your mental health with these 7 tips.

If we cough, we go to the doctor, especially if we have a broken arm. However, if our psyche is under some strain, we usually push the symptoms aside. Circles of thought, inner restlessness and listlessness are to be taken just as seriously. More and more people are suffering from burnout or depression in these fast-moving times.

Our psyche should also be our top priority.

7 tips to take care of your mental health

1. Don't fall asleep in front of the TV

Stress in everyday life often leads to sleep problems. Better to skip the TV, even if it's a welcome distraction. Notice how the quality of your sleep changes when you read a book, draw, or call a friend instead. At the end of the day, allow yourself a little time away from outside influences to allow your thoughts to rest.

2. Integrate a piece of vacation into your everyday life

After the holiday, many people fall into a low - there is even a name for it, namely the "post-holiday syndrome". Try to remember the feeling of being on vacation.  Do you like reading on vacation? do you listen to music on the beach Of course, you can't conjure up the holiday destination, but try to consciously take a break for these activities.

3. Don't repress stress and negative feelings

Alcohol, cigarettes, fast food - all these things are great for distracting yourself after a stressful day. But they don't make problems go away. At best you forget them for a while, at worst the after-work drink becomes a habitual outlet and feelings have no chance to be processed. Try to become aware of what's bothering you instead of trying to deal with problems with habit mechanisms.

4. Meditate

Take time to meditate. Excuses don't count, because every person can free up three to five minutes a day in their everyday life to do something good for their mental health. You will find that you feel better afterwards.

5. Bike to work

Or do other sports. This advice is not something you like to hear, but it helps immensely. It is easier to exercise regularly if you integrate it into your commute to work. This is of course difficult in winter or on long journeys, but even then it is good for our brains to simply get off one station earlier. On the bus and train we are often busy with everything - the environment, the smartphone - except ourselves. Movement has the opposite effect, fresh air clears the head.

6. Treat yourself to therapy

Usually one only seeks help when the psychological strain becomes too great . However, it is much more effective to take precautions and stay healthy. If you have the feeling that you need help from outside, you should follow this wish. Too many people downplay their own problems.

Think of therapy as a wellness treatment that allows you to release all the stress that has accumulated. Talk to your family doctor about it, he will be able to recommend colleagues to you.

7. Call in sick even if you have mental health issues

Mental health problems are now number two when it comes to sick leave in Germany. In other words, nobody has to be ashamed of not feeling well psychologically. Everyone has grief. Everyone goes through tough times. Nobody is alone in this. Take your mental health seriously and call in sick when you feel like you need a day off for your psyche. You do not have to give your employer a reason for your sick leave.
